4 mistakes motorists make when seeking towing services at night

Experiencing a vehicle break down is almost as certain as the sun rising the next morning. What will set you apart from other motorists is how well you handle the situation.

If your vehicle breaks down at night, it can be additionally stressful and dangerous. Proper planning will help you react in the right way when such a tragedy occurs. While many people will tell you what you should do when your vehicle breaks down, this piece will tell you what mistakes you should avoid in such situations.

1. Staying on/near the road when it's dark

If you notice your vehicle grinding to a halt while driving, try your best to safely get off the road as soon as possible. Start by turning on your emergency lights and steering your vehicle to the side of the road. Staying on the road may increase your risk of being struck by oncoming cars, especially because darkness reduces visibility. Don't assume that other motorists will see you as they drive by.

2. Waiting too long to seek help

Once you're stranded on the road at night, the obvious option is to seek help as quickly as possible. However, you'd be surprised by just how many motorists wait too long before either calling a loved one or calling a towing company. Some may try to fix the vehicle themselves, while others may fear the cost of having a towing company move their vehicle off the road. Waiting for too long in the dark by yourself is never a good idea. Make sure you seek help as soon as your vehicle breaks down in the dark.

3. Losing their calm too quickly

Anytime your vehicle just gives up on you, it's easy to become frustrated. But this isn't the time to throw a temper tantrum. Instead, remain calm and make timely decisions that will get you back home safely. Call a towing company to retrieve your vehicle and a friend/family member to give you a ride home. Remain calm and collected as you communicate with both parties.

4. Not having an idea of their location

Many motorists also don't know where they are when their vehicle breaks down. While you don't have to be a location expert, you should be able to have a rough idea of the vicinity you're in. Use road markers (on highways), street signs or billboards to give the towing service a general idea of where your vehicle is located.
